Ducktown Museum & Burra Burra Mine, Ducktown, TN

Photos by Ken Humphreys

When the first astronauts were in orbit around the earth, only two landmarks were clearly visible from space - the Great Wall of China and the Burra Burra Mine in Ducktown, Tennessee. The Burra Burra Mine was a major copper producing mine. Trees for miles around were cut for fuel to smelt the copper and the fumes of the process devistated all vegetation for miles around making a huge ecological scar which was easily visible from space. The area has since been revegetated and a small museum exists at the old mine site with one of the old mine trains on display. As these photos show, the small mine train is is extremely deteriorated condition. The museum however is well worth the time for a visit by anyone passing through the area.See http://www.gamineral.org/ducktown-museum-pics.htm for more information.
