Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, Jamestown, California & the Sierra Railway

by Ken Humphreys

The Railtown 1897 State Historic park is located in Jamestown, California about 100 miles south of Sacramento. The park includes the historic Jamestown shops and roundhouse and offers steam train rides during the summer months. The park is a favorite location site for film makers and is known as "The Movie Railroad." Numerous films have been made there starting in 1919 with a silent serial, "the Red Glove." Since that time over 200 films and TV productions have been shot at Railtown 1897 including The Virginian, High Noon, Unforgiven (with Clint Eastwood) Death Valley Days (with Ronald Regan) and Petticoat Junction.
