The Grand Canyon Railway

by Ken Humphreys

The Grand Canyon Railway operates a scenic line from Williams, Colorado to the Grand Canyon National Park. Even if you don't have time for a trip to the Grand Canyon, if you are passing through Williams enroute east or west and have about an hour, it is worth the time to stop at the depot and to view the equipment in the yard. The photos here were taken during two such brief visits. Click on an image below to see its full sized version.

Grand Canyon Railway 2-8-0 #18 at the Williams, CO depot. #18 is a SC-4 class locomotives built in 1910 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in Pittsburgh, PA. It's a 2-8-0 consolidation-type engine and weighs 160 tons.
Three photos of Grand Canyon Railway 2-8-0 #20 at the Williams, CO depot, another SC-4 class locomotives built ALCO. The Grand Canyon Railway web site no longer lists this locomotive so it presumably is no longer in service.

Seeing is believing! Here is a large rubber-tired highway tow-truck being used as a switch engine in the Grand Canyon Railway yard to pull a gondola and a flat car.
